Dakwala, a brand-new restaurant inspired by Mumbai’s traditional Khanawal eateries, is set to open its doors in the heart of Newcastle’s Grainger Street this spring.

The name ‘Dakwala’, derived from ‘postman’, symbolises a messenger of flavours, capturing the essence of Bombay’s rich culinary heritage.

Dakwala, poised to bring an immersive cultural experience, pays homage to Bombay’s history with a vintage allure reminiscent of the early 1900s when migrants flocked to the city of Bombay. Celebrating the working-class roots of Bombay’s food culture, Dakwala will seamlessly intertwine the history and food culture with contemporary dining reminiscent of the authentic Bombay Canteen culinary experience.

The new restaurant promises an authentic culinary journey through Bombay’s diverse and flavourful streets, serving dishes that capture the essence of the city’s rich heritage. The restaurant’s food philosophy will celebrate the remarkable diversity of Bombay’s culinary landscape, delivering an unparalleled experience to the residents of Newcastle. From delectable street food to innovative twists on traditional dishes, Dakwala will offer a curated menu showcasing the best of Bombay.

Beyond the menu, Dakwala Canteen will boast an immersive ambience, seamlessly blending the vintage feel of the early 1900s with contemporary design. This versatile setting will accommodate up to 220 covers, perfect for late-night dining, mid-week catchups, or bigger celebrations —an inviting space for all occasions.

Rajiv Tiwari, founder of Dakwala, shared his excitement about the opening, saying: “I am thrilled to be able to bring an element of Bombay’s vibrant and rich culinary heritage to Newcastle through Dakwala. We have curated an eclectic menu bursting with diverse flavours and cultural influences, promising our guests a memorable exploration of Bombay’s culinary tapestry in the heart of Newcastle. Dakwala isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a place where the spirit of Bombay comes alive, and I want to create a space where the love for food and culture intertwines, leaving an indelible mark on Newcastle’s hospitality scene.”

The new venue will also house a stylish bar with a carefully curated drinks menu that perfectly complements the food and experience for guests when visiting. A haven for cocktail enthusiasts, the bar will offer a unique blend of traditional and neo-Indian cocktails, promising a symphony of flavours inspired by indigenous ingredients and innovative mixes influenced by various regions of India. A variety of wines, beers, ciders, spirits, and soft drinks will also be available, ensuring there’s something for every palate.

Dakwala is set to open its doors this Spring, inviting Newcastle to experience a unique blend of Bombay’s history, culture, and exceptional dining in the heart of Grainger Street.
