The Quayside’s legendary SIX Rooftop restaurant is close to the completion of its makeover and is due to reopen on 13th February 2024.
Get ready to embark on a mouth-watering journey as SIX Rooftop, the celebrated dining spot perched atop the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, is putting the finishing touches to its exciting refurbishment. As it gears up for its 15th Anniversary, the iconic restaurant is undergoing a tasteful transformation that seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with the venue’s rich history and unique architecture.
The upgraded SIX Rooftop is set to introduce a host of enhancements including a dedicated bar area, a cosy viewing lounge, an exclusive Chef’s Table, and a revamped menu that pays homage to its impressive 15-year legacy. The redesign, skillfully crafted by interior designer Julie Chambers, embraces a darker colour scheme, creating an inviting and intimate atmosphere with improved acoustics and upgraded lighting.
From the moment you step in, you’ll be captivated by the venue’s charm—a perfect marriage of wood and marble-style furnishings. The ambiance promises a more immersive and tranquil experience for every guest, ensuring a relaxing dining experience. The rooftop restaurant, a beloved gem since its opening in 2009 on Gateshead’s Quayside, has been a go-to for those seeking exceptional dining with breathtaking views.
As the doors reopen on Tuesday, 13th February, you’ll be greeted by a lavish refurbishment that transforms the space into a full-service fine dining restaurant, featuring a viewing lounge for relaxed dining, a Chef’s Table for intimate gatherings, and a spacious, dedicated bar area.
The venue, now boasting a deep natural palette with tones of green and grey, introduces a chic wooden floor and bar—a focal point for the venue’s renewed charm. The viewing lounge offers a dedicated space and menu for casual dining, providing a sophisticated yet relaxed option overlooking the scenic River Tyne.
For those seeking an intimate culinary journey, SIX Rooftop’s new Chef’s Table accommodates parties of up to six, allowing guests to revel in the culinary magic happening in the kitchen. The state-of-the-art bar area is a highlight, featuring reeded glass and a stylish blend of stainless steel, marble, and wood—a perfect setting to indulge in an array of beverages, including wine, cocktails, beer, and non-alcoholic alternatives.
Although significant investment into the restaurant has been made, this has not been reflected in the menu price. SIX offers one of the most competitively priced tasting menus in the region (Lunch £45, Dinner £54) alongside a Lounge menu of plates, most of which are under £10.
Julie Chambers, the designer behind the remodelling, brings her expertise in crafting exquisite designs for commercial spaces, bars, and restaurants to create a modern ambiance that complements the iconic history of the Baltic. Chambers emphasises her commitment to enhancing the outstanding views from SIX Rooftop across Newcastle, Gateshead, and the River Tyne.
Food Director Greg Lambert continues to lead the culinary direction, infusing the brand’s 15-year history into a menu that defines fine dining in the North East. Expect an eclectic menu celebrating the best of British cuisine with locally sourced produce and a focus on plant-based options.
Roy Ng, Operations Director at SIX Rooftop, expresses excitement about the refurbishment, promising not only a redefined physical space but also an elevated experience in both food and drinks. Join them in celebrating the next chapter of their story as they reopen on Tuesday, 13th February 2024—a date that coincides with SIX’s crystal milestone 15th Anniversary.
