Yarm is a small market town located in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees in North Yorkshire.

The cobbled Georgian town, perched on the southern bank of the River Tees, is incredibly picturesque and is home to a thriving high street peppered with scores of independent shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.

It’s high street is so popular among locals and visitors to the region that it was recently crowned England’s ‘Rising Star High Street’ in the Government’s Great British High Street Awards 2019.

Yarm is full of history with beautiful landmarks including the Viaduct and its 18th-century town hall and boasts great places to live with a large variety of venues to eat and drink, and many fantastic things to do with the family.

Below are a few things to consider if you’re thinking of moving to Yarm…

Location, location, location

Yarm is just a short distance (less than a 15-minute drive) from Middlesbrough, providing residents with easy access to a wide range of urban amenities such as restaurants, shops, cinemas, children’s activity centres, museums and much more.

It’s well connected

Yarm is well-connected to the rest of the region, with good road and rail links to Middlesbrough and other nearby towns and cities. This makes it perfect for those who want all the benefits of rural life while maintaining an easy commute to and from work.

Yarm’s train station also connects to the East Coast Main Line and Tees Valley Line, with great connections of services between Saltburn and Manchester via York.

Additionally, Teesside International Airport is only a 12-minute drive away from Yarm and boasts flights to a number of popular destinations including Amsterdam, Alicante, Corfu, Palma, Dalman and more.

A real community town

As a small, rural town, Yarm has a strong sense of community, with a range of local clubs and societies that residents can get involved in. This can be particularly appealing for people who want to live in a place where they feel connected to their neighbours and can get involved in community activities.

Many events are held in the town each year which are great to get involved in such as the annual fair held in the High Street on the 3rd week of October for 4 days and the Yarm Gala.

Stunning housing

Yarm’s little-known history as a port town led to it being a real boom town in the 16th and 17th century, and that legacy has left it with some of the region’s most sought-after historic homes.

Continued investment over the years means it is now able to offer a real mix of properties. From quirky cottages to brand-new homes on a number of its new housing estates, there is something for everyone. Including some brand-new Bradley Hall homes on the Wynyard Estate which is within 10 miles of the town.

Education

Yarm is renowned for its excellent education facilities with very highly regarded Junior and Secondary Schools and even a sixth form. The schools located in Yarm, such as Conyers School, Yarm school, Egglescliffe School and Yarm’s Primary school have been rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, providing the range of excellent schools for families relocating to the area to choose from.

Low crime rates

Crime rates in Yarm are generally low, with it being among the top ten safest small towns in North Yorkshire, making the town a safe and secure place to live with your family.

A rich history

Yarm has a long and interesting history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Roman period and even the first relatively complete Viking age helmet was found in Yarm. This makes it a great place for history enthusiasts to explore and learn about the past. With some great landmarks to discover and a great deal of rich history on offer in Yarm, such as the Parish church, the Town Hall, The Friarage and Yarm Castle – what more could you ask for.

Yarm’s Town Hall is currently being transformed into a heritage centre and will be holding an exhibition when it opens displaying a 3D model of the first ever Viking helmet found in Britain.

Local economy

Despite its small size, Yarm has a buoyant business community, with a mix of small businesses run by Yarm locals and larger companies based in and around the town. There are many options for employment in Yarm, making it great for those who are wanting to work closer.

High quality of life

Yarm is a fantastic place to live, with a mix of urban and rural amenities, a perfect location for everyone, a strong bustling community, and a range of recreational and cultural activities to enjoy.
