At the turn of the 20th Century, Michelin Tire founders created a free guide of maps, stop-off points and restaurants across France. Further to this, they expanded to create a rating system of restaurants in France, which has since spread across the world and is now the most renowned restaurant award. The AA followed suit and award rosettes to the best restaurants.

The North East is home to multiple Michelin starred and AA rosette awarded restaurants that provide a dining experience like no other. There is a wide variety of luxury, fine dining restaurants that provide an opulent and memorable experience for diners across the region. Whether for a milestone celebration or simply an incredible dinner, there is something for every palette. We took a look at some of the best.

In Darlington, the two Michelin starred restaurant Raby Hunt is an unforgettable experience. The chef, James Close, serves a tasting menu of 12 or 15 courses with seasonal foods inspired by the local environment. The theatrical, exclusive experience is highly sought after and is another level of luxury dining. The setting is intimate, and you can eat at the kitchen table as James cooks each dish fresh in front of your table. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday and requires booking in advance to ensure availability. The pinnacle of fine dining, the Raby Hunt has won countless awards and is the ideal place for exclusivity in the North East.

Located on the Quayside is a Michelin starred restaurant set within a 16th century town house called House of Tides. Created by Kenny and Abbie Atkinson, it is Newcastle’s only Michelin starred restaurant and encourages a casual and informal space where luxury food becomes accessible to everyone. A welcoming space by the river, House of Tides has a nine course menu with exclusive wine pairings. The couple have also opened a new restaurant Solstice next door, with a 15 to 18 course tasting menu which emphasises intimacy and elegance.

In Jesmond, the ever popular Peace & Loaf has been mentioned in the Michelin guide and has two AA rosettes and promises ‘fine dining without the fuss’. Using the freshest, local ingredients, their seasonal menus are inspired by life in the North East including a Brown Ale pie and fish and chips soup. The menus are accessible, and the restaurant ensures everyone feels welcome. With high beamed rooms and a wall full of vinyls, the space is informal and comfortable.

On the outskirts of Morpeth in Northumberland is the stunning Eshott Hall. With two AA rosettes, it prides itself on creating meals inspired by the coast and countryside around Northumberland and uses locally sourced ingredients as well as vegetables from their own kitchen garden- ensuring the freshest of meals. Their attention to detail is evident and every dish is crafted to be the best. The food is- for fine dining- very affordable and ensures all can enjoy their delicious offerings. With a stunning setting of rolling hills and country estate, the views definitely add to the dining experience and ensure an unforgettable meal.
