How Hotel Gotham Newcastle is about to change the city’s hospitality scene forever
This autumn, one of Newcastle’s most recognisable buildings will enter an exciting new chapter.

This autumn, one of Newcastle’s most recognisable buildings will enter an exciting new chapter.

The city’s former fire and police stations on Pilgrim Street are being transformed into Hotel Gotham Newcastle – a five-star experience, design-led destination that brings a sense of heritage and glamour to the heart of the North East.

Opening in two phases, the first stage will see the old fire station building open its doors as a 57-bedroom hotel, complete with six luxury suites. The second phase, launching in early 2026, will unveil the adjoining police station adding more rooms and a new events space.

For many, the building’s transformation is already one of the city’s most talked-about developments not just because of its location or Grade II-listed status, but because of what it represents – a fresh perspective on hospitality in Newcastle, where history, style and service meet.

General Manager Chris Thompson says: “We want this to feel like a hotel with a story. There’s so much character in the building and in the city itself. The goal was to honour the past while creating something new – something Newcastle hasn’t seen yet.”

Chris, who joins the project from roles at Malmaison and Hotel du Vin, leads the team with a clear ambition to create more than just a place to stay, but a destination for both locals and visitors. That means design that tells a story, food and drink that’s worth going out for and experiences that feel special from the moment you arrive.

Inside the hotel, the interiors marries Art Deco influence with modern comfort – think marble monsoon showers, roll-top baths, rich textures and thoughtful nods to the building’s former use. Many original materials and features have been restored, while new additions like velvet furnishings, mood lighting and soft brass accents create a warm, luxurious atmosphere.

One of the hotel’s most striking spaces will be Siren, its contemporary restaurant, offering seasonal dishes and elevated dining in a relaxed setting. It’s joined by Fire, a cocktail bar housed in what used to be the fire engine room. While the names reference the building’s past, the menus are designed to look ahead – blending classic and creative flavours with a North East edge.

And for those seeking a more exclusive experience, Club Brass, Hotel Gotham’s private members’ club, will offer a quieter space to unwind. Set across two floors, the club will feature velvet booths, a curated cocktail list and a calendar of members-only events, ranging from art previews to tastings.

Memberships are now open and designed to appeal to those who want something a little more private – whether that’s professionals looking for a stylish meeting spot, creatives in need of a retreat or locals who want a place that feels personal but premium.

Adding to the drama is an exclusive new live music residency with The Good Times Collective UK – bringing world-class musicians and DJs into Hotel Gotham’s bold new space. Each evening has its own identity, from Latin jazz on Fridays to soul trios and DJ finales on Saturdays, right through to global grooves on Sundays. The soundtrack flows beyond the stage too, with carefully curated playlists echoing throughout the hotel – from ambient tones at breakfast to prohibition-style jazz in Club Brass.

Chris continues: “There’s a lot happening in this part of the city and we’re excited to be part of it. We’ve tried to capture that spirit – something that respects what came before but feels current and forward-looking.”

Even ahead of its opening, Hotel Gotham has made a visible impact. They have introduced its debut overnight package, Fire and Ice – celebrating the crispness of the North East autumn with a promise of indulgent warmth and glamour inside the hotel’s Art Deco walls. Available from November, the new package includes bed and breakfast, a bottle of prosecco served on ice and a fiery chilli-inspired treat. Whether for a stylish city break, an indulgent staycation or the perfect excuse to escape the chill, Fire and Ice is billed as the ultimate way to experience Newcastle’s newest luxury destination.

For Newcastle, the opening of Hotel Gotham signals more than just a new hotel – it reflects a shift in how the city is being positioned. With increased investment and regeneration in and around Pilgrim Street and a growing appetite for hospitality experiences with a sense of story and style, Hotel Gotham’s arrival feels well-timed.
