Businesses across Wearside and beyond are supporting each other and boosting the local economy thanks to a Sunderland-based initiative.
Companies such as Ocado and Nissan are among hundreds across the city purchasing Sunderland Gift Cards to thank and reward staff or as gifts for clients.
And not only does the card make a welcome gift, but it increases footfall at – and raises awareness of – city businesses.
The brainchild of Sunderland’s BIDs – which include the City Centre BID and the Seafront BID – the card can be redeemed at almost 200 shops, restaurants and venues across the city.
To date the gift card has added £450,000 to the local economy and Sunderland BIDS is hopeful that figure will continue to rise.
“Since its launch the card has gone from strength to strength,” said Roberta Redecke, Head of Business Services at Sunderland’s BIDs.
“Businesses of all types and sizes are recognising the worth of being involved and ensuring that people spend their money in the city.
“Our feedback also shows how happy people are to receive a Gift Card as it gives them so much choice.
“They can treat themselves to something special at the Bridges, enjoy a trip to the theatre or go out for meal, for example, and recipients love that versatility.
“The cards are also a great way to introduce people to the amazing independent businesses we are so lucky to have in the city centre.”
The cards can be ordered online as a physical card or as an e-card which will be sent to Apple Pay or Google Pay and go directly to the recipient’s phone
They can also be purchased in person at the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Houghton Library, National Glass Centre and Washington Centre Library. To buy a gift card or for more information visit www.sunderlandgiftcard.com
