Businesses offering unsecured guest Wi-Fi are exposing both staff and customers to data theft, while also risking legal consequences for themselves.
To address this, software specialists Purple have announced a live panel event in Newcastle focused on tackling the growing security and compliance risks associated with guest Wi-Fi networks.
The free event, From Open to Secure: Wi-Fi Risk & Compliance, will examine these challenges to provide actionable tips and take place at Neville Hall on Westgate Road on 30 January 2026.
The event is suitable for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as larger regional enterprises. Registration is required.
Purple CEO Gavin Wheeldon, who will join the panel, said: “Guest Wi-Fi is often treated as a convenience, but in reality it can expose businesses to serious risk, from card data theft to legal liability if criminal activity takes place on their network.
“At the same time, many people rely on public Wi-Fi to access essential services such as banking and government platforms, meaning insecure networks can leave users exposed, vulnerable and excluded.”
The panel will be chaired by serial entrepreneur Andy Dancer and will feature Eliza May Austin, founder of That Security Company, and a legal representative to bring perspectives across cybersecurity, legal responsibility and regulatory compliance.
The discussion will focus on how open or poorly protected Wi-Fi networks are exploited in practice, and what organisations can do to reduce exposure while maintaining access for customers and staff.
A live security demonstration will show how attackers can intercept data on unsecured networks, reinforcing the importance of secure public Wi-Fi for both regulatory compliance and digital inclusion.
The event runs from 3.30pm to 4.45pm, with arrival from 3.00pm, followed by networking at the venue’s bar. Attendees will receive a free Purple router on attending.
