From TikTok to Fenwick’s First Beauty Personal Shopper
Fenwick, a long-standing institution in the North East, has recently undergone a significant transformation with a multi-million-pound investment in its Newcastle flagship store.

An Interview with Chris Tomkins

Fenwick, a long-standing institution in the North East, has recently undergone a significant transformation with a multi-million-pound investment in its Newcastle flagship store.

This renovation has elevated the department store’s beauty hall and enhanced the overall shopping experience, combining luxury with a local, welcoming atmosphere. Among the exciting developments, Fenwick introduced a brand-new role: Beauty Personal Shopper, filled by Chris Tomkins.

Since joining Fenwick in this unique role, Chris has quickly made an impact, bringing his passion for beauty, customer service, and local culture to the iconic department store. We sat down with Chris to discuss his journey, the role he brings to Fenwick, and what makes the Newcastle store a standout destination for luxury shopping.

What role do you play in creating the luxury customer experience at Fenwick?

At Fenwick, shopping is more than just buying products – it’s an experience. You can start by browsing homeware, grab a coffee or croissant in Fred’s, and then make your way up to the beauty hall, where you’ll find everything from mocktails to luxury beauty treatments. The North East collaborations with brands like Barbour and Greggs add a unique local touch.

I believe it’s the friendly, welcoming people at Fenwick that make the experience feel special. It’s a place where you feel glamorous but also at home. Whether it’s a beauty treatment, a new outfit, or a quick spritz of perfume, Fenwick is a one-stop shop for luxury and personalised care.

As a Beauty Personal Shopper, my job is to guide customers, introduce them to new products, and offer advice on the best places to visit in the North East. Fenwick is still developing the role, but I’m excited to be part of this evolving customer experience.

How did you land your job at Fenwick Beauty Hall?

I found out about the Beauty Personal Shopper role while working at EE and popped into Fenwick to learn more. After their million-pound refurbishment, I really missed being part of the Fenwick team. When they offered me the role, I was thrilled. It’s a brand-new position, where I personally shop for customers, recommend beauty products, and use social media – perfect for me!

Fenwick holds a special place in my heart. My mum used to visit Fenwick’s Christmas window displays in the ‘60s, and I’ve always felt that Fenwick is a North East institution. When I moved to Newcastle at 23 and got my first job there, my family was over the moon. Fenwick’s welcoming atmosphere and luxury experience make it stand out.

You’ve built a big following on social media, tell us about your journey with TikTok…

My journey with TikTok started very organically. In November 2022, I decided to quit my job and go backpacking around South East Asia and Australia for five months. I wanted to document my adventures because I was travelling a bit later in life and wanted to remember it all. So, I began vlogging, called it “A Day in the Life,” and combined it with my job at Fenwick’s Blow Dry Bar. Fenwick was supportive, and it made the vlogging process much easier.

In January 2023, I filmed my travel day to Australia and watched my TikTok followers and likes grow right in front of my eyes. I started getting recognised in supermarkets by Australian women who were excited to see someone visiting their country. I spent my time travelling, documenting everything – even a mugging in Cambodia – and had the best time of my life.

When I returned to the UK my TikTok account had about 9,000 followers at the time, and I didn’t want to stop creating. I decided to focus on building a following in the UK. I started filming local days out, restaurant visits, and more, which made me a comfort creator for many of my followers. Now, with almost 67,000 followers, I post twice a day and have seen tremendous growth.

How would you describe the Noth East and its people?

The North East is amazing – the people here are so friendly and supportive. It’s a community where everyone lifts each other up instead of competing. I’ve connected with other local creators like Demi Donnelly and Georgia Scott, who have been really welcoming.

TikTok has also given me the chance to explore local opportunities, like supporting North East businesses and creating content that highlights the best spots in the region. I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had thanks to the North East community.
