Hebburn-based Castle is playing a role in the transformational change taking place on Wearside, supplying all mechanical, electrical and public health services to Culture House, which will sit at the heart of Riverside Sunderland.

Along with installing a 50m2 photo voltaic system, Castle will install all mechanical, electrical and public health facilities, including an energy efficient VRF air conditioning system, providing heating and cooling throughout.

Castle, winner of the Constructing Excellence North East SME of the Year 2023 Awards, was awarded the contract by leading UK construction and infrastructure services company, Kier, to work on the landmark building, which will provide a vibrant, dynamic and engaging space for residents and visitors.

The 6,691m2, four-storey Culture House will feature exhibition, learning and community spaces. Led by Sunderland City Council, it will recognise the city’s rich heritage, while inspiring a passion for learning and knowledge. It will be a place of ambition making and creativity, stimulating a passion for reading for all ages and offering opportunities to try new technologies, meet authors and artists and find out more about what’s going on in Sunderland.

With its headquarters in Hebburn, South Tyneside and offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Teesside, Castle, which has a secured turnover of £65 million in 2024, is one of the UK’s leading providers of all disciplines of building services, offering a wide range of high-quality engineering, and contracting services covering all aspects of construction, mechanical, public health, renewable and electrical engineering.

Andrew Dawon, managing director at Castle, said: “Castle has watched in admiration at the rapid and highly impressive regeneration taking place in Sunderland city centre.  The council and stakeholders have a clear vision for the future of the city and Culture House is clearly very much part of it. We are delighted to have been awarded the contract by Kier and pleased to play our part in the transformation that is taking place.”

Steve Lynn, operations director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, said: “Culture House will be a vibrant and dynamic space for local residents and visitors, and we are pleased to be working with Castle once again to deliver an exciting project that will help to transform Sunderland city centre.”
