Now recovered from cancer at the age of just 22, Ben Hall has been awarded the prestigious Overcoming Adversity Award for his remarkable resilience.
Despite the challenges posed by his diagnosis at a young age, Ben successfully completed his joinery apprenticeship at Blackburn’s H&S Joinery, showcasing exceptional perseverance and an unwavering positive attitude.
Ben’s journey of triumph over adversity led to his well-deserved recognition at the award ceremony held on 25th May. The Young Person in Construction Awards 2023 held by the Construction Development Alliance recognised his story as an inspiration to others, highlighting the power of determination and a strong mindset in overcoming challenges.
Just weeks into beginning his apprenticeship as a joiner at H&S Joinery, Ben was diagnosed with cancer, throwing him into an arduous battle. Balancing his treatment appointments with college lessons presented numerous obstacles. Ben shared “remaining focused on my future career and what my life could look like in years to come helped me push through some of the hardest moments.”
The unwavering support extended by H&S Joinery was crucial in enabling Ben to continue his apprenticeship. Instead of revoking his place or suggesting a return after recovery, H&S Joinery provided the necessary support to ensure Ben’s uninterrupted progress. The company offered counselling and reassured Ben that they would stand by him throughout his journey – a promise they have fulfilled.
Ben attributes much of his knowledge and growth to the guidance and mentorship of Alan Davidson, his supervisor, who joined forces with Ben a year into his apprenticeship. Reflecting on their shared journey, Alan Davidson commended Ben’s work ethic, attention to detail, and unwavering positivity, stating, “Despite the extremely difficult situation Ben found himself in, he remained positive and made the absolute best out of it.”
Mr Hudson, Managing Director at H&S Joinery, maintained close contact with Ben’s parents from the outset, ensuring them of the company’s unwavering support. Mr Hudson stated, “We endeavoured to stand by him and keep him on as an apprentice joiner. Ben persevered through his struggles assisted by the positive encouragement from supervisors. Our supervisors kept a close eye on Ben and fuelled his motivation by creating regular goals for him to reach so he could always focus on the next step.”
Choosing a practical career path after leaving school, Ben found the perfect opportunity at H&S Joinery, recommended by his peers. The company exceeded his expectations, offering dedicated care and attention during this challenging period.
H&S Joinery’s commitment to nurturing a family-like environment has been instrumental in the success of their staff. Many experienced employees started their careers as apprentices, just like Ben. Believing in Ben’s potential has proven to be a wise investment for H&S Joinery, as he has now become a fully qualified joiner and a true credit to the company.
Despite the extended timeline of his apprenticeship, taking five years to complete instead of the usual two to three, Ben’s dedication, coupled with the exceptional support provided by all staff members, enabled him to achieve his goals.
Ben Hall’s remarkable resilience and determination served as an inspiration to all those facing adversity. His story demonstrates that with the right mindset, unwavering support, and a strong work ethic, individuals can overcome even the most challenging circumstances to achieve their dreams.
