Argyle House School, Sunderland’s only independent school, is stepping confidently into a new era with the arrival of Headteacher Mr John Sample.
Having joined the school during the summer term, Mr Sample now begins his first full academic year, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a clear, student-focused vision.
Situated in the heart of the city, Argyle House has proudly served the local community for over 140 years. Its long-standing reputation for academic excellence, pastoral care, and a nurturing environment has been shaped by generations of dedicated staff and strong leadership. The school’s tailored curriculum, small class sizes, and individual attention remain central to its ethos, offering a distinctive educational journey for children aged 2 to 16.
The onsite nursery, Little Crickets Sunderland, is a vibrant part of the school community. Recent renovations have created larger, brighter spaces to support the youngest learners in their early development, further enhancing the school’s commitment to providing high-quality education from the very start.
Mr Sample’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter in the school’s history. With a background in independent education and a proven track record in senior leadership, he brings both stability and fresh energy to Argyle House. His previous headships within the independent sector saw record exam results, outstanding inspection reports, and national recognition from the Independent Schools Association. Now, his focus is on building on the school’s existing strengths and continuing the success established under previous heads.
“My aim is to provide pupils with an all-round education in a supportive environment where every child feels safe, happy, cared for and valued as an individual,” says Mr Sample. “Argyle House has a proud tradition of academic excellence and pastoral care, and I’m excited to lead the school into its next phase.”
This summer’s GCSE results reflect the school’s commitment to high standards. A strong proportion of students achieved grades 9 to 4 across a broad range of subjects.
But life at Argyle House goes far beyond the classroom. The school places a strong emphasis on character development, creativity, and community involvement. Pupils enjoy a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme that includes sport, music, drama, and educational visits, ensuring that learning is both well-rounded and engaging. Mr Sample is passionate about encouraging independent thinking and preparing pupils not just for exams, but for life beyond school.
