The historic Old Church building on West Avenue, Gosforth has been sold to Newcastle restaurant group, Alkaro Hospitality, operators of popular Newcastle restaurant Babucho.

The transaction, which was facilitated by Bradley Hall – the North East’s largest full-service property firm – marks a new chapter for the iconic site on Gosforth’s bustling High Street.

Known for its extensive experience in handling high value property deals across the region, Bradley Hall represented the sellers throughout the marketing and the transaction.

The property, located in the former United Reformed Church, is a well-known landmark in the area, with its distinctive architecture and prime location. Spanning 679m² (7,297ft²), the building is situated in a vibrant part of Gosforth, surrounded by shops, cafés and local and national retailers, and conveniently close to Regent Centre Metro station.

Neil Hart, Chief Executive of Bradley Hall said; “The Old Church’s prime location, adjacent to Gosforth Shopping Centre and surrounded by a thriving community, made it a highly sought-after property. The transaction was completed in just a few weeks, reflecting the strong demand for such unique hospitality venues.

“We act on behalf of some of the leading hospitality operators in the region, and have experienced a range of activity in the industry for some time. It’s an exciting sector to be in, with many high quality experience-led venues coming to the North East.”

The former church is equipped with a fully fitted bar and restaurant space, complemented by a mezzanine dining area and an outdoor terrace. The versatility and unique character of the venue were key factors in attracting Alkaro Hospitality to the site.

The decision to shut the Barluga Gosforth site reflects a strategic move by Vaulkhard Group and came about as part of a broader vision to focus on larger projects.

The group has been operating in the North East for some 30 years and remains one of its most respected leisure groups, with venues throughout Newcastle and in Pontleland, Morpeth and Sunderland.

Alkaro Hospitality plans to officially take over operations at The Old Church in the coming months. The group has hinted at the possibility of special events and promotions to celebrate the acquisition is said to be looking forward to welcoming both old and new customers when the venue reopens its doors.
