Newcastle-based pub with rooms operator The Inn Collection Group’s The Angel Inn has been named one of the top places to stay in the Lake District, featuring on a Sunday Times “best of” list about the national park.

Acquired by the company in December 2020 and reopened following a multimillion-pound refurbishment at the start of the year, the offering of “simply styled rooms and cocktails near Windermere” is what earns the Helm Road venue its place on the list.

Led by Newcastle-based Design North and The Inn Collection Group’s projects team, renovations at The Angel Inn have created an elegant venue at the heart of the town, working to a brief to create a cosy, classic country inn aimed at families and walkers.

An easy amble from the shores of England’s largest lake, this classic inn has sweeping views above the jolly bustle of Bowness on Windermere.

Its large pub garden offers vistas over the lake and onwards to Claife Heights and the Langdale Pikes with selected rooms in the adjacent Oakbank House offering further views up towards Ambleside.

The Sunday Times describes the transformation of The Angel Inn as “especially welcome, given the affordable pricing and quiet garden setting in Bowness, a short walk from Windermere.”

With 37 rooms including double, twin and family configurations, The Angel Inn is well placed to explore one of the most popular villages in the Lakes.

Attractions including The World of Beatrix Potter and Windermere Jetty Museum are within an easy stroll of the Inn, as is a steamer pier which offers regular sailings of pleasure cruises to Lakeside and Ambleside.

Proving to be one of The Inn Collection Group’s most popular sites in the Lake District since its reopening, the inn finds itself in exalted company on the Sunday Times list, joining award-winning B&B’s, Michelin starred restaurants and cosy, self-catering cottages.

Operations manager Paul Brown said: “We have created a wonderful bar and restaurant that people are seeking out and enjoying so to see it make a list of the top places to stay in the Lakes is fantastic.

“The refurbishment has refreshed all the bedrooms at across the three buildings into the group’s style, created a cosy and welcoming pub and a stunning garden terrace with a really pleasing view of Bowness and the surrounding fells.

“We’re delighted with the response from our guests and hope Sunday Times readers will be inspired to come and stay at inn to eat, drink, sleep and explore.”
