Floral inspired café bar to open in Sunderland’s Keel Square
Sayturk Group is set to open its third concept venue in Sunderland’s Keel Square.

Sayturk Group is set to open its third concept venue in Sunderland’s Keel Square.

Flower Cafe will take the fourth and final unit under the Holiday Inn Riverside Sunderland, joining the Botanist and Keel Tavern, both of which are now open to the public, and The Muddler, which is expected to join them later this year.

New CGI’s have shown that the venue will include a floral exterior, in keeping with Sayturk Group’s other sites in Newcastle’s Grainger Town and Alnwick.

The third concept venue by Sayturk Group, The Flower Café will serve cocktails, pastries, gourmet sandwiches and gelato. Decorated with wisteria, the site joins Sayturk’s other venues in Newcastle and
Alnwick as a picturesque hospitality venue. The café will seat 113 inside and 46 in the dedicated outdoor space and is set to employ 20 Sunderland locals, boosting the local economy.

Gerard McElvenny, from Pulp Studios Design House, who also helped design Keel Tavern and the recently revamped Gatsby’s, said: “We’re delighted to have helped shape plans for a stunning new cafe bar that will provide a colourful new addition to Sunderland’s hospitality scene.

“The plans will bring something different to the city, a place that can be enjoyed by day and by evening by people who live and work in Sunderland as well as those who visit.”

Northern property firm, Bradley Hall, completed the letting of all fourunits on behalf of Sunderland City Council.

Helen Wall, Director of Bradley Hall Sunderland, commented: “It has been a pleasure to act on behalf of Sunderland City Council as the agent for Keel Square. The four tenants are a welcome addition to
Riverside Sunderland and have proven incredibly popular with locals and visitors alike.

“The plans for The Flower Café look fantastic and will provide a great spot for dinner or a business lunch for those working in the city centre, The Yard or City Hall.”

The Flower Café is just one of many businesses that have moved to Keel Square and Sunderland as part of the impressive regeneration of the area. Its multi-billion-pound transformation has attracted significant investment from the likes of Legal & General, Ocado and RSA, as well as leading leisure operators such as The Botanist and the Vaulkard Group.

The outdoor space at Keel Square – adjacent to The Flower Café – is also set to undergo improvements this summer with the creation of a new Pavilion, which will host a fully immersive 3D screen, exhibitions from local artists and a viewing platform for visitors to watch the development of the nearby Culture House, the new home of the city library, which is set to open in 2025 and will complete the Keel Square regeneration project.

Peter McIntyre, executive director of city development at Sunderland City Council, added: “Flower Cafe has been a huge success in Newcastle and like the hospitality groups behind The Botanist, the Keel Tavern and The Muddler, it is wonderful to see another business that has traditionally focused on locations North of the Tyne seeing the huge potential in our transforming city. “
