In the ever-evolving world of fashion, social media platforms like Instagram have become a hub for style inspiration with local fashion influencers leading the way. We get to know the people behind three of the North East’s most exciting accounts.

When Claire started her Instagram account, her focus was primarily on interiors, until one day she decided to include fashion. With a degree in theatre costume, she spent five years in London trying to break into the industry and used her account to fill a void. Now, at 48, shares her style and inspires more than 20,000 followers.
I believe fashion is a powerful tool for self-expression and age should never dictate what someone wears. Women over 40 are embracing fashion more than ever, recognising that style is not confined to youth, but rather a reflection of individuality and confidence. Whether it’s experimenting with new trends or embracing timeless classics, fashion is about celebrating who you are at any stage of life.
My style of fashion is very much influenced by my mood, how my body feels and what I need to accomplish that day. Some days, I gravitate toward relaxed, comfortable outfits, while on other days I feel like embracing something more structured or bold.
I love mixing classic, timeless pieces with a blend of designer and high street finds to create a look that feels uniquely me – chic but never overdone. I’m also slightly obsessed with accessories especially bags. I’ve always been this way. For me, an accessory can truly make or break an outfit, adding that final touch that pulls everything together. This combination of high-end and everyday wear, topped off with the perfect accessory, lets me express my personal style while staying versatile and practical.
I’m loving this season’s colour palette of deep burgundies and olive greens. I’m especially drawn to the idea of creating a monochromatic look by mixing different textures and fabrics in the same tone. It’s all about embracing the warmth of the colours and the richness of the fabrics, making fall and winter fashion truly inspiring.
Now, more than ever, we have access to global trends and styling ideas in real time, making fashion more inclusive and diverse. Instagram allows people to see how others mix high-end pieces with affordable finds, how to experiment with colour, or how to wear timeless staples in fresh ways.
Since starting my account, I’ve been given so many amazing opportunities, such as working with brands like Fenwick, Hobbs, eBay and Sephora. I hope when people see my content they take away the message that fashion has no age. It’s about having fun with your style, feeling good in what you wear and embracing the fact that fashion is for everyone, no matter your age.
My top three style tips:
1. Cosy, textured knits are a major trend, offering warmth and style. Try sweaters with exaggerated turtlenecks, cable-knit designs and oversized fits – perfect for creating a chic but comfortable look.
2. Wear monochromatic outfits in rich autumnal tones like camel, burgundy and olive green are key. Mixing different textures— such as wool, leather and suede—in the same colour family creating a sophisticated, polished look for the season.
3. Stand-out accessories like oversized scarves and wide-brimmed hats, or a statement bag, play a crucial role in elevating any outfit.

Joanna McNeish has had an interest in different styles for years. When she turned 40, she decided to set up her own Instagram account to help women of a similar age enjoy putting outfits together. Eight years later, Joanna has gained more than 350,000 followers and shares daily inspiration and tips on how women can bring their wardrobes to life.
I would describe my style as relaxed glamour. I love to mix designer accessories with high-street clothing and I tend to stick to a classic style that’s easy to recreate. I don’t think my style has changed much over the years – I’ve always stuck to the wardrobe staples that I can bring out year after year. However, I’ve definitely got more confident with trying different trends and wearing bold prints and colour.
Leopard print has always been in my wardrobe, so I’m very happy to see it trending again this season. I’m excited about all the deep reds and browns around autumn, as these are great colours to add into your wardrobe using accessories, like scarfs, bags and boots.
Instagram has become a platform for real people and brands to showcase the widest range of styles and fashion, giving everybody the inspiration and confidence to express their own outfits.
I hope my content encourages people to be more confident in themselves to wear something different and step out of their comfort zone a little. I also hope I inspire people to shop their wardrobes and style up items they already have and don’t always feel the need to buy new.
The highlights for me since starting my account have been the friends and connections that I’ve made. I’ve become very close with some lovely like-minded women on the app and it’s always encouraging to receive positive feedback. It’s also given me the opportunity to work with some of my favourite brands, including co-hosting two live style talks with John Lewis in Newcastle.
My top three style tips:
1. Dress for you and your lifestyle – not just because it’s the latest trend.
2. Plan your outfits in advance if you can the night before. It saves time and makes getting dressed early in the morning less stressful.
3. Make sure your clothes fit correctly. Always go for the right size that looks good on you, whether it’s a size 10 or a size 16. Size is just a number.

Racheal Connor set up her Instagram account 12 years ago. Originally a platform for Racheal to promote her online jewellery business, Blake Jewellery, it has naturally transitioned into a stylish corner of the internet in which she shares a mix of fashion tips, outfit inspiration and an insight into her every day life as a keen runner and mother of two girls.
I’d describe my style as smart-casual. I love a trainer and own many pairs. I’m loving that all the classic adidas trainers – the ones I wore first time around – are making a comeback. I’m here for this trend for sure. I also love jeans and a well-cut trouser. I’ve always loved a barrel leg and still do. I don’t think you can beat a blazer and a t-shirt combo, either.
I think Instagram has made fashion more accessible to people. You have some much inspiration at your fingertips – literally. When I reflect on my Instagram journey so far, a real highlight has been having the opportunity to work with some fabulous brands. It’s been amazing. I’ve had some real “pinch me” moments – something I’ll talk about to my grandkids about one day. Having breakfast with Trinny (of Trinny London) and making a video in her iconic bathroom, as well as working with Fenwick and meeting some really inspiring people within the business, are two of my favourite memories so far.
I like to think that I don’t take myself too seriously and that, through my content, I’m able to spread some positivity. I’d like to think I might inspire someone to get out running or try that new hair-do. Whatever the takeaway is from my page, I hope it makes people smile.
My top three style tips:
1. Don’t buy it because it’s in fashion – buy it because you love it and it brings you so much joy to wear it.
2. You’re never too old.
3. Never save anything for best, wear it on repeat if it makes you happy and, finally, sod
what anyone else thinks – you’re not dressing for them you’re dressing for you!
