The former Dover’s Inn in a pretty, rural village was originally part of the Raby Estate, and its name refers to it being a favourite fishing point for the old hunt.
Previously a professional golfer who didn’t quite make the cut, James Close bought the pub with his parents on the Raby Estate, where his obsession with cooking was ignited.
Self-taught chef James is full of passion and in his pursuit for perfection, has never missed a service. His enticing, highly original menu is a showcase of precision, from a selection of snacks that reflect his global travels to signature dishes such as a seasonal salad of 48-52 top notch ingredients, presented in a unique and creative array of textures and temperatures.
The line-up of dishes changes with the seasons but expect a procession of meticulously crafted creations such as crab tartlet; aged otoro nigiri; razor clam with almond and celeriac. The presentation is never short of exquisite, with beautiful crockery specifically matched to each dish, while the comprehensive wine list offers value and detailed tasting notes. Add in smooth and friendly service, plus a kitchen table where diners can have a front row seat to watch the chef in action, and it’s clear to see why The Raby Hunt has made such an impact in such a short period of time.
We are offering one lucky winner the chance to win a luxurious dining experience of 15 tasting courses, with a classic wine pairing at the two Michelin star Raby Hunt restaurant in Darlington.
